Rose – delicate aroma or natural healer?

When we imagine the rose, its delicate petals, its fragrance that transports us to a wonderful garden, and its eternal symbolism of love and beauty immediately come to mind. But this queen of flowers is not just an ornament for the senses. It hides a whole alchemy of substances that can touch both our body and our health. This is precisely what the scientific publication “Rose Flowers—A Delicate Perfume or a Natural Healer?” (Mileva et al., 2021) focuses on, which poses an interesting question: are roses just a delicate fragrance or can they also be natural healers?

The article focuses on the so-called “old roses” – Rosa damascena Mill., Rosa alba L., Rosa centifolia L. and Rosa gallica L. These are species that are grown in Bulgaria, Turkey, India and the Middle East and whose flowers have been transformed into oils, waters and extracts for centuries. Today, these products find their place not only in perfumery and cosmetics, but also in the food industry and folk medicine. The rose is a bridge between culture and science, between temptation and treatment.

Its secret power lies in its composition. The petals contain flavonoids, anthocyanins, tannins and essential oils, among which citronellol, geraniol, nerol and linalool shine. Each species and each field carries its own signature – the aroma and properties change according to the place, time of picking and the method of extraction. It is no coincidence that the Bulgarian rose damascena is considered a true treasure, famous for the richness and purity of its oil.

Scientific observations show that the rose is not just a romantic symbol. In laboratory conditions, its extracts show an effect against cancer cells, while sparing healthy ones when carefully dosed. Its aromatic molecules can block viruses – from herpes simplex to influenza strains, and in some studies even HIV protease. In addition, rose oil is a strong opponent of bacteria and fungi, with Bulgarian oil once again standing out with particular power.

But the rose does not stop there. It also brings a gift for breathing – it relieves inflammation, acts against coughs and soothes irritations. And as an antioxidant, it is like a shield against invisible enemies – free radicals, which damage cells and accelerate aging. Thus, its delicate aroma is not only poetry for the soul, but also potential protection for the body.

Of course, not everything is a fairy tale. Safety requires attention. In small quantities, rose products are relatively harmless, but higher doses can cause unwanted effects. And although the laboratory data is impressive, clinical studies on humans are still too few. This means that the rose has enormous potential, which has yet to be explored in depth.

Ultimately, the rose is something unique – it is both a symbol of beauty and a possible source of health. Especially the Bulgarian rose damascena, which with its rich and well-studied chemical composition can become a valuable functional ingredient in foods with health benefits, as well as a promising natural ingredient for modern medicine. Its petals hide not just a fragrance, but a future in which nature and science go hand in hand.
